Anchorage resident Leslie Lynn Maxwell, 78, died peacefully April 3, 2004, at Providence Alaska Medical Center with his wife and family at his side. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Christian Community Church, 4240 Wisconsin St. A celebration of life will be afterward at the Bayshore Clubhouse, 3131 Amber Bay Loop. Mr. Maxwell was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Fort Collins, Colo., to Parke and Goldie Maxwell. He grew up on a farm. He graduated from Cache LaPoudre High School in 1944 and then served in the Marines. He married Barbara Chesnut in 1948 in Fort Collins. They drove to Alaska in 1949 for the summer and returned to Colorado that fall. There he completed his bachelor's degree in animal husbandry at Colorado State University. The family returned to Alaska in 1951. Since 1953, they resided on their Rabbit Creek-area home site, where they raised their four children. Mr. Maxwell worked at the Alaska Railroad, then Arctic Fuel, which later became Petrolane Fuel, which he managed for 10 years. He then worked on the North Slope during the winters until the completion of the Alaska Pipeline. He and his wife began gold mining in 1973 in the Forty-Mile Mining District near Boundary. They continued working their mine until 2002. Mr. Maxwell was a charter member of the Rabbit Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Teamsters 959, Alaska Miners Association and Hovercraft of Alaska. His family wrote: "Les was an adventurous, fun-loving, spirited man who enjoyed the great Alaska outdoors with his wife, Barbara, always at his side. They ran a hunting camp for two years on the McLaren River. They fished, hunted and enjoyed snowmobiling and flying. His 'can do' spirit has been passed to each of his children." His family includes his wife, Barbara; daughters, Linda Wessels Sture, Marjorie Maxwell and Marilyn Maxwell; and son, Sam Maxwell; sons-in-law and friends, Jim Hagee, Lindsay Crutch, Tom Moore and Christy Hudson; and grandchildren, Jason Wessels, Joel Sture, Maxwell Crutch, Taylor and Graham Moore and Ashley and Jake Maxwell. He was proceeded in death by his brother, Wayne Maxwell. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Hospice of Anchorage, 500 W. International Airport Road, Suite 500, Anchorage 99518. Arrangements are with Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel.
