Orlando served with the 11th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in on October 7, 1863 as a Quartermaster sergeant in Company M. He was wounded on June 4, 1864, and mustered out on July 12 1865.

After the War, Orlando and his family lived in New York. The obituary for Percival Clement Liscomb states Orlando was a partner in the firm Murphy & Licomb, which was in "the oil business."

An obituary was published in the Rutland Daily Herald (Rutland, Vermont) on Novemeber 5, 1897. ""His life was that of an active, successful, upright business man, with little notable incident except for honorable service in the army during the war."
