Homer Mitchell, Former Edina Policeman, Died Suddenly Yesterday

Homer J. Mitchell, 76 years old, who had lived the last 25 years in Edina, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 6, 1963. He was in his car which was being driven by Edwin Pinson of Edina, on his way to his farm south of Edina, when he became ill and was dead on arrival at the Gibson Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Allen L. Vancil of Edina will officiate and burial will be in Linville Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, James Monroe Mitchell of Edina and William Howard Mitchell of Chicago, five grandchildren, a brother, Bruce Mitchell, of Harrison, Ark., and several nieces and nephews.

A son of Joshua and Anna Prosser Mitchell he was born March 3, 1887, in Knox County. He was married to Zenobia Florence Kennedy Aug. 4, 1907, in Edina and they were the parents of the two sons mentioned and twin sons Clifford and Cletus, who died at the age of six months.

Mr. Mitchell was elected city marshal in 1938 and re-elected in 1942. He also served as nightwatchman in 1950. In 1928 he was proprietor of the Davis Cafe. He and his son, Monroe, operated the Kelley Corner Service Station for a time, taking possession in 1933.

He was also preceded in death by his mother, a native of Knox County, who died April 15, 1933, his father, who came to Knox County with his parents in 1856 and died Feb. 2, 1934, a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Neator, and a brother, James, Sept. 27, 1943.
