Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Norfolk, England, he served as a Private in the 78th Regiment of Foot, British Army. In actions at Lucknow, India, on the night of September 25, 1857, Private Ward remained by Captain H. M. Havelock, 10th Regiment, Deputy Assistant-Adjutant-General, Field Force, who was severely wounded. On the next morning, he escorted that officer, plus a Private of the 78th Highlanders, who was also wounded, through a very heavy cross fire of ordnance and musketry, saving the lives of both and bringing them in safety. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 18, 1858. He died at the age of 43 in Worcestershire, England.
