Chaplain LTC Merritt O. Slawson, USAF (Ret.), of San Antonio, was born February 6, 1910 in Garwood, TX, and died on Monday, October 6, 1997. He served 26 years in the US Air Force and was a 12 year Associate Pastor and Visiting Minister of Travis Park United Methodist Church.

Chaplain Slawson enlisted in the USAF in June of 1942 and served in England. He was known as the "old chap" by the airmen he served with. "Old Chap" gave the boys English pennies as lucky tokens when they started across the channel in the big fortresses, telling them, "Bring this penny back to me. I'll be praying for you."

He had a lot of pennies - this old chap - each one carefully scratched with a name - and when the pennies weren't out on bombing missions they were in his pocket - each one in its own separate envelope. So many of the men came and asked him to scratch their names on pennies - he had to go often to the village bank for change.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Katherine Montgomery Slawson; son, Jack Slawson and wife, Shirley, Houston TX; daughter, Christine Smith, San Antonio; granddaughter, Deena Michelle Raynor and husband, James; grandsons, Kevin Scott Smith and wife, Michelle, Brian Casey Smith and wife, Laurie; great-grandchildren, Hunter James Raynor, Garrett Scott Smith and Lauren Casey Smith.
