Son of Ward and Cirene Hale Scott. Henry grew up in Townshend, and attended Leland and Gray seminary.

On September 1, 1862, Henry mustered in as a Corporal in Company G, 11th Regiment Vermont, Heavy Artillery. He was promoted to Sasrgent on November 27, 1863. Henry was wounded twice; first on June 6 1864 and then at Winchester on September 19, 1864. He mustered out June 24, 1865.

After the war, Henry returned to Townshend to work on the family farm. He lived in Brattleboro, Vermont, for a few years, then moved to Boston about 1898.

In Boston, Henry was a superintendent for several tenement houses, and worked as a janitor in another building. Henry wanted to spend his final days in Townshend, and he passed away while staying there.
