Son of Almond or Almon Churchill and "H" (transcript of death record). The death record states he died of Painter's Colic (lead poisoning) In 1850, the US Census recorded a family comprised of J. A. (or I.A) Churchill, Mehitable Churchill, and 6 year old Charles L Churchill living in Boston, Massachusetts.

During the Civil War, Charles served as a private in Company G of the 11th Vermont Regiment. He enlisted on December 7, 1863, and was taken prisoner of war in July or August, 1864. Wounded at Winchester on September 19th, 1864, he transferred to Company D in June, 1865 before mustering out August 25, 1865.
