Christine Lukens Buchanan, 85, died October 11, 2013, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born Sept. 17, 1928, at Beloit, to Lyle and Lois Tilton Lukens.
She received a bachelor's degree in English from Sterling College in 1950, and a master's degree in journalism from Kansas State University in 1970.
On June 4, 1951, she married Thomas S. "Buckshot" Buchanan in Hopewell Presbyterian Church near Beloit. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2001.
She taught various high school classes for a number of years, including English and journalism in Frankfort, Sterling and Washington.
She and her husband purchased the Bucklin Banner in 1956, operating it until 1959, when they purchased the Washington County News. She was a prolific writer, producing news stories and columns each week during the years the couple owned the newspaper.
They sold the newspaper in 1981. In 1982, she became Extension publications editor at Kansas State University, retiring in 1995.
The Buchanan's produced a history of the Hopewell Church near Beloit and a history of Sterling College for its centennial. They received the college's Distinguished Service Award for the work they did on its behalf.
She won numerous writing awards, including a first place from the National Newspaper Association in 1972, for a story about a fire that consumed the family home. In 1974, the Buchanans won the Kansas Press Association's Victor Murdock Award for their coverage of Greenleaf in the year following a tornado that destroyed much of the community. She was named Woman of Achievement for Kansas Press Women in 1979.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Hutchinson, where she moved in 2010. She had lived in Washington prior to that, where she was active in the community.
She was a long-time member of both Kansas Press Women, serving as president for two years, and the National Federation of Press Women, where she served 10 years on the board of directors, including two years as communications contest chair. From 1977 to 1983, she served on the board of trustees of Sterling College.
She loved laughing, her family, reading and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 2003, a son, Jim, a twin sister, Charlene Myers, and her parents.
Buchanan is survived by: four children, seven grandchildren; two sisters, and a brother-in-law.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Washington, with Pastor Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Friends may sign the book Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, and the family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church in Washington. Burial will be in the Washington City Cemetery.
