Sarah Banks was born September 25, 1834 at Cuba, Illinois, and was united in marriage to W. L. Shallenberger in 1854. Mr. Shallenberger was killed in the Battle of Shiloh, Tenn. which was fought April 6-7, 1862. To this union was born five children, three of which are yet living, one son (George) died at Rush Medical College in 1885, this was such a sad blow to the mother that she never fully recovered from this great bereavement and the loss to her was sore and painful.

December 1869 she was joined in marriage to Isaac Spencer who departed this life at Whiting, Kansas in 1896. To them was born four children, three are still living. In early life she sought the Lord, and united with the United Brethren Church. In this communion she remained until a few months ago, when with her family she moved over to Muscotah. There with her daughter and son she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Through all these years of her Christian life she has been faithful to her vows, and devoted to her Master.

Her last sickness was short. On Sabbath February 15 she became ill and the day following, the 16th of February, 1903 at a half past two o'clock, she quietly passed away, calmly as the sun sinks beyond the hill; loved by all for her noble womanly qualities.

The remains were brought here on the 11 o'clock train and taken to the U. B. church where a funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Shambaugh after which they were interred in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
