Josiah Bowers Valentine was born February 5, 1837, in Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, the son of John and Elizabeth Bowers Valentine. He never married.


Obituary for Josiah Bowers Valentine from the Circleville Herald of Monday, March 26, 1928:

"J. B. VALENTINE IS VICTIM OF BAD ACCIDENT. Former County Recorder Dies After He Falls Down Cellar Steps of Nephew. Joseph (sic) B. Valentine, 91, former County Recorder, died at the home of nephew, C. F. Young, in Washington Township, Saturday afternoon. His death followed an accident that befell him Friday, when he sustained a broken shoulder and a concussion of the skull in a fall down a cellar way. The deceased was born in Circleville Township. He was a son of John and Caroline Bowers Valentine. He never married. The funeral services will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Young Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. J. M. Wenrich will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Cemetery. The deceased was an uncle of Israel, Emanuel and Edward Valentine, of this city."

"Josiah B. Valentine, son of John and Caroline Bowers Valentine, born in Circleville Township, February 5, 1837, departed this life in the home of his nephew, C. F. Young, on March 24, 1928, at 3 p.m., aged 91years, one month and 19 days. Was baptized in infancy, united with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Circleville, Ohio, on the ninth day of April, A. D. 1852, by Rev. Joseph A. Roof. The deceased was the last of a family of seven children, three brothers and three sisters preceding him to the spirit world. He leaves to mourn two nephews: C. F. Young and H. E. Young, and one niece, Mrs. Cora Saltzgaber, and many relatives and friends. He was enrolled as private in Company C, 13th Regiment O.V.I. April 24, 1861, was mustered into service May 6, 1861, and transferred to Regimental band on same date. He was mustered out with Company C, August 24, 1864, at Columbus, Ohio."
