Valdez resident STEVEN LLOYD WEEKS, 50, died Dec. 9, 2002, on the Richardson Highway. He was returning to his job in Valdez from his Air National Guard weekend duty when he had a fatal automobile accident. A graveside service with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mr. Weeks was born Aug. 1, 1952, in Eugene, Ore. He came to Alaska with his family in 1962, growing up in the Eagle River area. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy as an ordnance mechanic and served in the Vietnam War. After returning to Alaska, he worked as a carpenter in Anchorage and crab fisherman out of Homer, operated businesses in snow plowing and river rafting, and was a mechanic in Eagle River, a Marine engineer in Dillingham, and an equipment operator in Seward. He achieved his license to captain a 100-foot vessel and worked on the North Slope in various capacities. After Sept. 11, 2001, Mr. Weeks was called to active duty and assigned to the Valdez Airport as team chief for joint operations, airport security. He and Molly, his canine companion, ensured safe air travel and public safety. His family wrote: ''Steve's calm presence demonstrated the unquestionable confidence and authority needed for the successful airport security operation. Steve's infectious enthusiasm and indomitable spirit demonstrate his high degree of professionalism. After his return from active duty, Steve was employed by Doyon Universal Services as a security agent assigned to Valdez Pipeline Station. ''Steve will be greatly missed for his love for life, ability to dream and encouraging us to do the same.'' He is survived by his mother, Pauline Sudut; stepfather, Jim Sudut of Eugene; father, Lloyd Weeks; stepmother, Marie Weeks; sister, Becky Ann Weeks, all of Eugene; and dog, Molly.
