John S Coates, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, died Monday evening at 8 o'clock at his home, 202 West Fourth St. after a long illness with Bright's disease. At the age of 17 Mr. Coates enlisted in the McLaughlin Calvary as a bugler and was taken prisoner during the Stoneman raid. He was confined in Libbey, Andersonville, and Belle Isle Confederate prisons. He is survived by one sister, Miss Harriet Coates,who resides in Mansfield. Funeral services Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. S. L. Stewert.
