Laura Elizabeth was born on December 18, 1899, the second youngest of 12 children. Her family moved from Ravenwood to Conception, Missouri, a mere mile and a half from Clyde, where she would eventually enter at the age of 18. Her "ordinary" family life was her training ground for "common" living inherent in Monastic Life.
She was invested in 1919 and made her monastic profession on May 1, 1920, receiving the name of Sr. M. Elenora. Sometime before the celebration of her Golden Jubilee, Sister returned to her baptismal name, Sr. Laura.
Sister lived almost all of her monastic life at Clyde except for a year in Mundelein. Though she busied herself in the Correspondence department and Sacristy, she is mostly remembered for her love of music. In her early years she taught music at the Academy. For the celebration of her Diamond Jubilee Mass in 1980, she requested that every possible instrument available be used for this festive occasion.
Sister is particularly remembered for her openness and love for all, especially the young. She was very open minded about the changes of Vatican II and told one new superior that she hoped we would not have to go back to the old ways. Her greatest joys in life she considered to have been her first Holy Communion, her entrance into the Convent and her Golden Jubilee, for which she requested The Sound of Music to be put on.for her Golden Jubilee day Sister wrote:
"I have fulfilled all my earthly desires by devoting my life to the Benedictine Monastic, Eucharistic life. Only one desire remains to reach an ever greater depth of intimate union with my Trinity."
Sisters health gradually declined after she transferred to St. Benedict Health Care Center. After a long life and final illness we entrust this beautiful soul to her Trinity where all her desires will be fulfilled in greater measure than the mind can fathom. Sister died on October 2,1987.
