John, anglicized from Johannes, was one of eight children born to Clause Friedrich Mohr 1825-1900 & Sophia Johanna Schultz 1835-1909 in Hartenholm, Germany. John immigrated to Grafton, Nebraska in May 1885 and married Eva Maria Hakansson in July of that same year. His parents and all but two of his six siblings also immigrated to Nebraska between 1884-1887.

The first five of John and Eva's nine children were born in Nebraska between 1885-1896 and then the family moved to Iowa where the next three were born between 1897-1905. In 1906, the family moved north to Brownlee, Saskatchewan where their ninth child was born two years later. They lived in Saskatchewan from 1906-1916 and then returned to the US, settling in Anaheim, California where they lived out the rest of their days.
