Lewis was a WWII Veteran earning a Bronze Star. He was at Hickman Army Airfield when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He later served in Guadalcanal and participated in the amphibious landing. Lewis served in the European Occupation Forces in Austria (Salzburg) and France (Orleans). His brothers Jessie and Carroll "Red" also served in Europe. He served in the Korean Conflict, along with brothers Jessie and Billy. He was assigned to a missile detachment in Los Angeles California when he retired in 1963. He was recalled to active duty and saw service in Vietnam. He formed the 137 Light Equipment Company in Ft. Riley KS and deployed to Chu Lai, RVN.
His son Patrick, 2 years later, also served in the 137(LE)in Chu Lai, RVN earning a Bronz Star. Lewis always liked to say that he served in three wars and retired twice from the US Army. He retired after 22 years, with his highest rank achieved as Sargeant First Class.
