U.S. Congressman. He migrated to the United States with his parents in 1830 and settled Avon, Ohio. Self by the use of his father's library, he taught at a district school for a short time and graduated from the University of Physicians and Surgeons New York, in 1840. He studied medicine in the hospitals of London, Paris, Edinburgh and Dublin and then engaged in the practice of medicine in Avon, Ohio, in 1841. Entering politics, he was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1848-49) and was a delegate to the State constitutional convention, in 1850. In 1851, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress, serving until 1853. After leaving Congress, he was a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1854-55) and director of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, (1858-63). During the Civil War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel medical inspector of the U.S. Army, (1862-65). After the war, he was again director of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, a professor of agriculture at Iowa Agricultural College, in 1869 and one of the first trustees of Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, (1870-73). He also was a professor of agriculture at Ohio State College and served until his resignation in 1892. Townshend Hall at Ohio State University, was named in his honor in 1896.
