Sgt. Reuben A. Ham 33rd Mississippi Infantry, . Wounded in the left hand and left arm at the Battle of Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee on Nov. 30, 1864, and left in a hospital there. On Dec. 2, 1864, while in a Confederate hospital at Franklin, Tennessee he endured the "amputation of third finger, left hand, at metacarpal phalangeal articulation." Captured in hospital at Franklin, Tennessee on Dec. 17, 1864, as the Yankee pursued the retreating Confederate Army of Tennessee following the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee , Dec. 15-16, 1864. Forwarded as a POW to Nashville, and admitted on Jan. 27, 1865 to No. 1 U.S.A. General Hospital at Nashville with records indicating that he had endured "amputation, 3rd finger, left hand, and fracture of left radius [the larger of the two bones of the forearm]," and with notation that these injuries were caused by a conical ball [i.e., musket ball] at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, on Nov. 30, 1864. Injuries treated with a "cold water dressing." Died in No. 1 U.S.A. General Hospital at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee on March 5, 1865, of erysipelas [bacterial infection of the skin], with notation that he was 32 years of age, leaving "no effects" [i.e., no personal property, cash, etc.] Buried in grave no. 12400, City Cemetery, Nashville, TN. A "Record of Death and Interment" indicates that his "hospital number" was 13498 and that he was married to Samantha Ham, whose residence was listed as Summit [Pike County], Mississippi. They had one daughier born in 1863. Samantha remarried after the war. Reuben's remains were reburied in Confederate Circle, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee in 1869. He received a Veterans Administration Confederate marker in 1992.
