Anchorage resident Jeff Newton, 59, died Nov. 10, 2003, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with his family and friends by his side at Alaska Regional Hospital. A unity memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at First Congregational Church, 2612 E. Northern Lights Blvd., followed by a potluck and open mike for sharing. Mr. Newton was born March 24, 1944, in Bend, Ore. In 1957 he moved to Alaska with his parents and sister. He served in the Navy and graduated from training at the top of his class and received a Vietnam Service Medal. He worked as a radar technician throughout Alaska and owned a computer consulting business. His family wrote: "Jeff had a keen and lively intellect and a loving heart. At computers and telecommunications troubleshooting, he was a genius. He loved his family and friends and loved God. "When he first learned of his illness, he said that he was not afraid of dying. When the time came, he would die. He knew death was not an end but only a step from here to what he would be doing next. He used his dying as a lesson to teach us how to live -- to undertake our own journey through life with peace and a quiet joy, not to be afraid of death (but) to accept it and to accept life. He was a craftsman who had done his job well, was satisfied with his work and was looking forward to his next job. His insights and understandings, his smile, sense of humor, gentleness, kindness and his direct questions that went right to the core of an issue will be missed." Mr. Newton is survived by his parents, Fran and Wes Newton of Benson, Ariz.; wife, Elaine; sister, Eileen Littrell; children and their spouses, Jacqueline and Ken McKinster and Jennifer and Eric Neilson of Portland, Ore., Tammy and Terry Kruger of Puyallup, Wash., Laura and Marv Berg of Anchorage and Billy and Angie Bayer of Eagle River; grandchildren, Bo, Amanda, Colten, Bradley, K.J., Laken, Breanna, Sierra, Chloe and Cobey. Donations may be made to Hospice Forget Me Not Grief Program, 500 W. International Airport Road, Suite C, Anchorage 99518. Arrangements are with Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory.
