The funeral of Ira Grant was held
at the church last Friday under the
auspices of the Woodbury G. A. R.
post, assisted by Rev. Mr. Gregory
and Rev. Mr. Simpson. The floral
tributes were large and beautiful
and the crowded house which was
filled to over-flowing with sorrowing
friends and relatives showed the
high esteem in which he was held.
His six sons acted as bearers. The
interment was at Sunnyside
cemetery. Mr. Grant's death was very
sudden. Last week Tuesday morn
ing he arose at 4.30, after building
the morning fire went to the barn
and milked, went into the house
and strained the milk and
apparently he had started to go to
his wife s room, when he fell to the
floor. Mrs. Grant heard the fall and
immediately ran to him, only to find
him unconscious. He breathed but
twice and a bright, useful, helpful
and happy life went out. He had
been in his usual health and had
done a good days work the day
before walking a mile to and from
his work. Mr. Grant was born in
this town 66 years ago last August,
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Grant,
who died in town many years ago.
When at the age of 16 Ira enlisted
March 7, 1863 where he faithfully
served as drummer boy until the end
of the Civil War. He returned home
and has since made himself very
useful in this community and no
meeting or entertainment was ever
complete without his presence. He
always had a pleasant word and
smile for every one and if any one
was in trouble he was always ready
and willing to assist them. He has
for many years held various town
offices. He was a natural musician
and for many years has been
chorister of the church and was also
janitor at the time, of his death.
Mr. Grant was twice married. His
first wife was Harriet Pratt, who
died in 1873. Two children were
born to them. George, who died at
the age of 12 years and Helen, who
is now the wife of John Folsom of
this place. He later married Dora
Steere, who survives him. Thirteen
children were born to this marriage.
10 of whom are now living, James,
Augustus and Harriet of this place;
George, Mrs. Annie Hoyt and Mrs.
Hazel Jones of Windsor; Carrol
and Mary, wife of John Tinker of
St. Johnsbury; Lucilla, wife of
Harry Sweet of East St. Johnsbury and
Pearl, who is attending school at
Brattleboro. Mr. Grant had lived
to see his children all married with
the exception of Pearl. He leaves
one brother, Frank C. Grant of
California, and one sister, Mrs. C.
L. Stacy of Concord. Among
those who were called here to at
tend the funeral of Ira Grant were
Hubert Steere of Concord, N. H.,;
Mrs. Eliza Grant of Lyndon; Mr.
and Mrs. George Grant, Mrs. Annie
Hoyt, Mrs. Hazel Jones of Windsor;
