Timothy Childs, Jr

US Congressman. He graduated from Williams College in 1811 and Litchfield Law School in 1814, afterwards practicing in Canandaigua, New York and then in Rochester. A Federalist, Childs served as an Ontario County Commissioner and Master in Chancery, a judicial position. After moving to Rochester, he served as Monroe County District Attorney from 1821 to 1825. From 1826 to 1829 he was county Judge, and he served in the New York State Assembly in 1828. In 1828 he was elected to the US House as an Anti-Mason and served one term, 1829 to 1831. In 1833 he served again in the state Assembly. In 1834 he was again elected to Congress, this time as an Anti-Jacksonian, and he was reelected as a Whig in 1836, serving from 1835 to 1839. During his 1836 term he was Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department. In 1840 Childs was elected to Congress as a Whig and served one term, 1841 to 1843. He then returned to practicing law in Rochester. In 1847 Childs traveled to Saint Croix in an effort to improve his health. He died aboard the ship "Emily" while returning to the United States.

Inscription on marker (on the opposite side of the marker of his wife) is very difficult to decipher. It does note that he died at sea on November 25, 1847, aged 57.
