He was born on Oct. 5, 1913, in Witherbee, N.Y., the son of Rose Music and John Bingel Sr.
Walter was a graduate of Lyon Mountain High School. He retired from Republic Steel Corp. when the mines closed in Lyon Mountain in 1968. He continued to work as a construction journeyman electrician and retired from Electrical Workers IBEW Local 781 in January 1980 after working on the Lake Placid Olympic Center, making it ready for the Winter Olympics. In May 2009, Walter was recognized as a 50-year member by IBEW Local 910. He was co-founder of the NYS Umpires Association, Lyon Mountain Chapter, in 1950. He was past councilman for the Town of Dannemora and was also past Clinton County recreation leader for all county summer youth baseball programs, which fielded over 100 teams around Clinton County.
Walter was a much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The love of his life, Leona Brien, passed away on Nov. 12, 1989, whom he married on May 1, 1943, in Assumption of Mary in Redford, N.Y., by Rev E. Elie.
Walter is survived by his son Bernard and wife Elsa of Endicott, N.Y., and their daughter Lori of Flushing, N.Y., son Justin and wife Tina and granddaughter Kassidy of Vestel, N.Y., and son Jeremy and April and grandson Cameron of Endicott, N.Y.; also his son Gary and his wife Janet of Morrisonville, N.Y., and their daughter, Dr. Sara Bingel of Manhattan, N.Y., and son Mark of Manhattan, N.Y.; also son Brian and wife Mary and their son Mike Rock of Plattsburgh, N.Y. He is also survived by a sister, Anna Pageau, of Lyon Mountain, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his parents, Rose and John Sr.; brothers, John Jr., Carl, Anthony; and sister, Mary.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Bernard's Parish Center.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church with Rev. Ted Crosby officiating.
Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lyon Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.
