John was born in Hays, Kansas on January 8, 1921, to Christian and Anna Nielsen Pedersen.
He came to live in Washington at the age of 15, graduating from La Conner High School in 1937.
In October 1942 he volunteered to serve in the United States Navy. John served with the Seabees unit in the Pacific. He spent three weeks at Guadacanal building a bridge, next taking part in the first major invasion of Bouganville, on to the Marshall Islands Enewetak Atoll to await orders to take part in the invasion of Guam. John served oversees a total of 27 months. His records show he was awarded Asiatic and Pacific battle ribbons with 2 stars and a good conduct medal. He began duty with a Seamans 2nd class and ended with a rating of Carpenters mate 2nd class. He was honorably discharged in October 1945.
In 1951 John married Laura Pinter. They were married 54 years until her passing in 2006.
John owned and operated Pedersen Automotive for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, growing fruit trees and gardening. Also he especially liked going to the coffee shop.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 5 sisters; and wife, Laura.
He is survived by nephew, Gary (Lavere) Campbell; niece, Nancy Dunton; special cousin, Shirley (Wilbur) Wood; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the United States.
An Urnside Service will be held Friday, January 16, 2009, 2:00 pm at Hawthorne Memorial Park.
Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon.
