US Congressman. He was born in Chester County, South Carolina, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1836, studied law, became an attorney in Talladega. Bowdon served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1844 to 1845. In 1846 he was the successful Democratic nominee for the seat in the US House of Representatives left vacant when Felix G. McConnell died. He was reelected to two full terms and served from December, 1846 to March, 1851. In his final term Bowdon was Chairman of the House Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds. he did not run for reelection in 1850 and returned to Alabama. In 1852 he moved to Henderson, Texas, where he practiced law until his death, and was a Presidential Elector in 1856, casting his ballot for James Buchanan. Bowdon was the uncle of Sydney Johnston Bowie, and the son in law of Thomas Chilton, who also served in Congress.
