Austin E. Roe, Jr., a Manhasset resident since 1944, succumbed to Alzheimer's disease three weeks after his 85th natal day. He was the beloved husband of Kathryn G. Roe (nee Posteraro), who succumbed to heart failure in 1999. They met at the age of 12, love at first glance.

Austin Roe is a direct descendant of Lt. Austin Roe in the Battle of Long Island, serving under General George Washington. Lt. Roe was the "Paul Revere" of that war, making a midnight horse flight to penetrate enemy lines with urgent secret missives. (There is a poem and many facts on his involvement on line through Google.)

Roe served in the Armed Forces in the Pacific Theater in WWII, later worked 25 years for Prudential Insurance, followed by years with the Port Washington Post Office, and then, "for the fun of it," as a school crossing guard with the 6th Precinct Police. He adored children, and vice versa.

Roe was an usher at St. Mary's for several decades, as well as a member of the Holy Name Society. He and Kathryn were married at St. Mary's. Austin had a tender grace, and was a familiar sight tending his lovely garden at 150 Park Avenue, until moving to Port Washington for two years, prior to being welcomed to the Lillian Booth Actor's Fund Home in Engelwood, NJ for the past 3 1/2 years.

He is survived by: his brother, George Roe, of Oviedo, FL; his adult progeny, Dianne Wright; James Austin Roe, and granddaughter Megan Artin, all in the New York vicinity.

The interment will be private, at the family resting place at Holy Rood Cemetery, with Father Peter of St. Mary's R.C. Church officiating.

The family requests, in lieu of any other form of sympathy, a contribution to "Broadway Cares," which is the principle source of funds for the Actor's Home. Please contact Peter Borzotta at 212-840-0770; [email protected] to request a "Care Card."
