Peggy Marie Bartel, 46, of Slinger, WI, passed away on Feb. 5, 2012 at Aurora West Allis Medical Center, with her family by her side following a valiant fight with ovarian cancer.

She was born September 25, 1965, daughter of the late Alois and Elverna (Behnke) Bartel. She was a 1983 graduate of Valders High School, Valders, WI. She continued her education at Lakeshore Technical College, Cleveland, WI and graduated as a Dental Assistant.

Early in Peggy's professional career she was hired by Dr. Jeffrey Menos to be a dental assistant at Shopko Dental in Appleton. Peggy went on with her dental education by graduating from Madison Area Technical College as a Dental Hygienist. She and Jeff had fallen in love and were married September 6, 1997. Jeff and Peggy moved to Slinger, and Peggy was employed as a hygienist for many years at two dentist offices in the Milwaukee area, Dr. Ricahrd Schabowski in West Allis and Dr. Dean Copoulos in Wauwatosa. Peggy worked as recently as December 2011 and had many faithful patients who were of wonderful support to her during her 4.5 year battle with cancer.

Peggy and Jeff enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball and football. They also enjoyed hunting and fishing and took many fishing trips to Florida. Other popular travel destinations were Arizona, the Upper Peninsula, Door County, and her beloved homestead, "the farm", where Peggy shot her first deer.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Jeff; one brother, Tim (Anne) Bartel, Whitefish Bay; four sisters: Betty (Terry) Weiland, Menasha; Nancy (Randy) Meyer, Kaukauna; Cindy (Bill) Heffernan, Green Bay; Debby (Tom) Umnus, Appleton; and sister-in-law, Loret Thill, Madison. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Lillian Menos, Appleton, and brother-in-law Dr. Perry (Mary) Menos, Appleton. She is also survived by nieces and nephews: Melissa Weiland, Trisha (Kyle) Everson, Kevin (Kristy) Meyer, Carrie (Shaun) Buntjer, Amy and Paul Umnus, and Joey and Kyle Bartel. She is also survived by Jeff's nieces and nephews: Nicole (Peter) Poppens, and Angela, Jonathan, Joel, and Rachael Menos, Appleton. She is also survived by one great-nephew and two great-nieces: Eric, Vallarie, and Brooklyn Meyer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Tom.

The family is grateful for the support from Peggy's special friend Carolyn Anhalt, who she waitressed with at the Big Boy Restaurant in Manitowoc many years ago, and high school friend, Kimberly Knight-Wiegert, whose talents and ideas never ran out. Much support also came from special friend, Kristin Brocker from Dr. Schabowski's office, a special patient and "mother figure" Anna, Nancy Gratton from dental hygiene school, and high school friends Patty Musical and Lisa Sharek. Peggy and Jeff had a very special Golden Retriever named Carmel who passed several years back, and their current Golden named Otis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Sat. Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Parish, 1200 Saint Gabriel Way, Hubertus, WI 53033. Visitation at the Church from 9 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance are appreciated.
