John Thomas Peacock was born on November 18, 1843, it is believed in Spalding, England. He was the son of Robert Peacock, a shoemaker, and his wife Mary Ann Bradfield Peacock. John and his brother Charles were adventurers and came to the South Florida Coconut Grove area in 1863. Thomas became known by the citizens in the area as "Jolly Jack" and later gave his name to the area known as "Jack's Bight" later name Coconut Grove to this day. He also served as a Dade County Sheriff, Tax Assessor and at one time kept the House of Refuge on the Beach. Thomas married Martha J. Snipes (b. April 20, 1852 – d. ca. 1911) on January 3, 1872. To Thomas and Martha were born 11 children. 1) Jackson Peacock (b. October 29, 1872, d. July 11, 1925). Jackson married Mary Elizabeth Rink (b. 1897, d. 1965) on November 14, 1897. 2) Charles Ewan Peacock (b. June 21, 1874, d. 1951). Never married. 3) Tavernier Peacock (b. December 21, 1875, d. March 18, 1923). Married Coral Fisher (b. June 4, 1881, d. October 1, 1970) on August 4, 1900. 4) Robert Henry (Harry) Peacock (b. September 9, 1877, d. April 5, 1951) He did not marry. 5) Anna Malinda Peacock (b. July 8, 1880 - ) Married William (Snipes) Claiborne on May 19, 1902. 6) Beverly (Bev) James Peacock (b. October 14, 1882, d. August 3, 1945) Married Margarita Valle (b. March 27, 1887, d. June 21, 1973). 7) Rafaela Peacock (b. February 10, 1885, d. October 7, 1972) Married John W. Davies February 9, 1931. 8) Richard (Dick) C. Peacock (b. November 4, 1886, d. September 16, 1968). Married Rosabell A. Carey (July 15, 1893) on September 14, 1911. 9) Edward Lindsey Peacock (b. January 3, 1889, d. May 31, 1961). Married Helena Smith (b. December 25, 1888, d. July 2, 1958) on April 25, 1914. 10) Frederick Malcom Peacock (b. November 28, 1890, d. August 1922) Married Hilma L. Spencer (ca. 1903-1970) on June 2, 1917. 11) George Lewis Peacock (December 5, 1894, d. January, 1951). Married Doris M. Coates (b. ca. 1894, d. September 12, 1970). George was Mayor of South Miami 1933-1936. Martha J. Snipes Peacock died around 1911 and is buried alongside her husband in Miami City Cemetery. John Thomas died on July 23, 1907 and is buried alongside his wife in Miami City Cemetery. In 2013, a new grave marker was donated by Suzanne Tripp Penny Lambeth to celebrate and remember the Peacock heritage and preserve the family name of Peacock.
