Private First Class Sayre was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea on April 27, 1951 and died while a prisoner on June 30, 1951. His remains were not recovered.
