SHERIDAN - Robert Sitler , a former Sheridan school board member who was believed to have been the longest-serving elected official in Colorado before his retirement last year, died yesterday morning, the school district said.

Sitler , 74, had served on the board of education for the Sheridan School District for more than 44 years. He was school board president for more than half that time.

Sitler first ran for the school board in May 1948 at the age of 27. He resigned from the school board last August, citing health concerns.

In a December interview with The Denver Post, Sitler described his reasons for getting involved. "We needed a good school district here, and I decided I could do a lot for the kids," he said.

He told The Post that he was inspired to run for office after he joined a campaign against a bond issue to "build three really fancy classrooms when we really needed six" more ordinary ones.

"We got it defeated, and I decided if I was going to be so gung-ho, I better get in and run for office," Sitler said in the December interview.

Sitler also had served on the city council, as Sheridan city judge, as a volunteer firefighter and on the first board of directors of Arapahoe Community College.

"He gave me my diploma when I graduated" in 1967, said Steve Fast, president of the Sheridan School Board.

"To have him to draw from ... it sure helped as far as me being on the board."

Said Sitler 's son, Dan: "He was just dedicated to the city and the kids to where they even named a street after him up there by the high school."

For more than three decades, Robert Sitler worked as an industrial engineer for Goodwill Industries, Dan Sitler said.

Services for Sitler will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Moore-Howard Mortuaries, East 17th Avenue at Clarkson Street in Denver.

The family said viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Interment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery.
