Jack and his parents and siblings came to Texas from Dodge City in 1890. Jack and his brother George engaged in the livery business with their father. Jack later became a farmer. He was elected as County Commissioner and served two terms. At the end of his tenure he was urged by friends to make the race for Sheriff, but declined. In appreciation of his many friends and the support they had given him in his political venture, he staged a huge barbecue and invited everyone to attend. A huge crowd turned out and partook of barbecue beef, pork and mutton along with pickles, onions, corn on the cob and cold drinks. The Municipal band furnished music for the gala affair. Jack became and auctioneer and was a familiar figure all over the county where an auctioneer was needed. For a time he auctioneered horses for the British government following World War I.
