Prime Minister and 7th President of Finland. His presidential term was from 8 March, 1946 to 1 March, 1956. His life straddled a time of great change in Finland's history, and because of his lifetime involvement in politics he was centre stage for a lot of this. During his time Finland moved from a province of Russia's, through civil war, to the wars against the Soviet Union in the 1940s, to the establishment of Finland as an independent nation which had to forge peaceful and enduring relations with its neighbours. Paasikivi was a realist who sought to achieve what could be done, rather than fight for an ideology that was not achievable.
