John A Sutherland was born in Barnet, Vermont to George and Elizabeth Sutherland. Notice that there is a difference in dates between his birth record and the gravestone date of birth. This is true for his brother Ralph also. I have no explanation for the differences, other than number transposition errors.
Representing Barnet, John served four years in the Civil War in Company I, 3rd Vermont Infantry, being mustered out with the rank of sergeant.
Enlisted: 7/5/1861, Mustered In: 7/16/1861, Rank: PVT, Co. I, 3rd VT INF, Re-enlisted: 12/21/1863, Promoted to CORP 8/1/1864, promoted to SGT 7/4/1865, mustered out: 7/11/1865. John A Sutherland, Civil War records (see: http://vermontcivilwar.org/get.php?input=30385).
John's hand was cut off in a planing mill accident in McIndoe Falls, Vermont. He died in Amity, Missouri, on December 23, 1904, leaving a wife (Elizabeth) and son (Ray C).
