Furniture retailers

The firm of William J. Heney & Co., was considered one of the "largest furniture establishments in the city." They were a retail operation, handling a line of Grand Rapids furniture produced by Berkey & Gay and Phoenix Furniture Company. A stencil found on the sides of drawers and in the interiors of case furniture is used to identify examples of furniture from W. J. Heney & Co.

The company was a family operation composed of William J. Heney (b. 1839), his father Richard Heney Sr. (1819-1893), and brother Richard Heney Jr. (1845-1919) with their wives working in the upholstery department. The family was of Irish descent and migrated to upstate New York in the 1830s, were the father operated a general store in Rochester, prior to coming to San Francisco in 1863. Both Richard Sr. and William worked in the furniture and mattress establishment of Jacob Schreiber in San Francisco before opening for themselves in 1868 at 751 Market Street. The principals were all considered "hardworking, enterprising, and economic." By 1871 they were averaging $70,000 in annual sales.

After a fire destroyed their operation in 1873, causing a substantial loss, they relocated to a large wareroom and basement at 725 Market Street. The new building was well located and commanding a high rent. By 1877 the firm was engaged in limited manufacturing and advertised the turning of wood and ivory as well as band and scroll sawing. With the firm doing a "large trade with good profit" they opened a branch store in Alameda on Eighth Street in 1879.

After the firms San Francisco lease expired in 1880 they relocated Ellis Street. The local paper announced the move in a brief paragraph:

The well-known and popular firm of William J. Heney & Co., desiring to keep up with the march of improvement, have just moved into their new and elegantly appointed building, erected especially for their vast furniture, carpeting, and upholstery business at Nos. 14 and 16 Ellis Street, just off Market. The building, constructed particularly for their business, is provided with elevators for customers and goods, speaking tubes and telephones…

Richard Heney Jr. left the firm in 1881 to pursue a career in viticulture and in 1877 Richard Heney Sr. retired. The business was dissolved in 1893.
