John J. Faustine, widower of Bertha (Magdon) Faustine and much loved father of Barbara Faustine, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2002, three days before his 82nd birthday.

Born 'Giovanni Faustino' in the town of Ripi, Provincia di Frosinone, Italy, about 60 miles south of Rome, John was a three-year-old boy when he emigrated from his native country on February 19, 1924. Along with his parents (Pietro and Assunta Faustino) and his younger brother (Natalino), he departed from Naples aboard the S.S. Colombo and arrived at Ellis Island on March 2. The Faustino family settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where four years later John's dad passed away at age 37.

In the States, Giovanni's name was anglicized to John Faustine; and in the spring of 1943, John applied for U.S. citizenship and permanent residency status. A lifelong resident of Bridgeport and Trumbull, John proudly served his adopted country in the United States Navy during World War II, and went on to live the American Dream. He was a founder and past president of Ann's Newfield Bakery in Bridgeport, an active member of the Bridgeport Old Timers Athletic Association, a life member of the Grosso-Seavey American Legion (Post 167) and the Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the Connecticut Bakers Association. A kind and gentle man, John was much loved and will be greatly missed for years to come by his family and his many friends.

A widower for 25 years, John was survived by his loving daughter, Barbara Faustine, of Trumbull; his two brothers, Natalino 'Nicholas' Faustine (and his wife Rose ) of the Lordship section of Stratford, Connecticut, and Peter Faustine (and his wife Marie) of Oronoque Village in Stratford; his sister, Maria 'Mary' Banas (and her husband George) of the Nichols section of Trumbull; his brother-in-law Bill Platt; his sisters-in-law, Florence (Magdon) Cholewinski and Cecilia (Magdon) Dzialo; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and his parents, he had been predeceased by several brothers- and sisters-in-law, including Frances (Giordano) Faustine.

Calling hours were held from 3 to 7 on Sunday afternoon, December 1, at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home in Trumbull. A procession from the funeral home took place at 10:30 on Monday morning, December 2, to St. Theresa's Church in Trumbull, for an 11:30 Mass of Christian Burial; and John's entombment, with full military honors, followed at the Chapel Mausoleum, next to his wife, in St. Michael's Cemetery of Stratford.
