Native Of County, Former Resident Of Knox City and Edina, Died Sunday

Joseph R. Carter, 87, a native of Knox County and long-time resident of Knox City and Edina, died at 5 o'clock Sunday morning, Aug. 23, 1970, at a hospital in Kirksville where he had been a patient two days. He had been in failing health several years but death was unexpected. He had lived in Kirksville since 1952 and since 1961 had made his home with his daughter and only child, Claudine, Mrs. Howard Terry, of 4 Cobblestone Lane there.

Funeral services were at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Jackson Dee Riley Funeral Chapel with Evangelist Thomas Dennis of Des Moines, Iowa, officiating. Burial was in the Knox City Cemetery.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Artie Adams and Mrs. Olive Arehart, both of Rutledge.

Mr. Carter was born July 17, 1883, a son of K. Walker and Eliza Sallee Carter, and was married Dec. 6, 1906, at Knox City, to Elsie Lenora Parrish who preceded him in death Aug. 15, 1957. After his retirement from farming Mr. Carter was janitor at the Knox City School nine years and after moving to Edina Public School three years and then was appointed in the same capacity to the Knox County Courthouse. Mr. Carter was a member of the Church of Christ in Kirksville.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carried Belle, Mrs. Rupert Westcott, who died Aug. 19, 1966.
