Elva Fern Compton, 92, of Delaware Ohio peacefully passed away Sunday evening at her residence.

She was born October 17, 1917 to Leverett Allen Compton & Della Devore Compton, the oldest of 10 children.

She began life on a small dairy farm near Shelbyville, IL but the approaching depression made it necessary that she go to work and she began to supplement the family income by working in a small telephone exchange. Later she was to move to Shelbyville where she was to become a long-distance operator. Ill health forced her to leave that work. An opportunity came to go to Lake Placid, NY where she worked in a small hotel and she recovered her health.

Not being able to continue schooling earlier, when her work was finished in New York, she returned to Shelbyville and entered the local high school. Pursuing further education, she attended a small college in Toccoa Falls, Georgia, from which she graduated in 1952. Upon graduation she went to Paint Gap, North Carolina to work in Home Missions. Then she was transferred to East Tennessee, the Cove Creek community to continue in missions work. That branch of service was discontinued and she moved with her close friend and companion, Mary June Dyer, to Delaware, Ohio, where they have resided until her death.

She is survived by three brothers and their wives: Royce D. Compton of Shelbyville, IL, Charles Arnold & Eunice Compton of Brooksville, FL, Paul F. & Kathy Compton of Shelbyville, IL. Also a sister Eula & husband Rev. Grant D. Shattuck of Cedar Springs, MI. She has many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant twin sisters, and sister June & husband Dean Roley, Eileen & husband Otho Hoagland, Helen & husband Richard, one sister-in-law Lavonne (Mrs. Royce) Compton.

She leaves her friend and constant companion of more than 50 years, Mary June Dyer, and two nieces, Susan (Shattuck) Dondlinger and Donna Kay Compton Howard.

Funeral services will be held in the Delaware Bible Church at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 where family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until service time at 7:00.
