VERNA IMOGENE WILLIAMS BATES, 85, of Memphis, formerly of Marked Tree, Ark., substitute teacher for Memphis City Schools, died Tuesday at Rose Care Center in Trumann, Ark. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Marked Tree Cemetery. Murphy Funeral Home in Marked Tree has charge. She was of the Assembly of God faith. Mrs. Bates, the widow of Harold F. Bates, leaves a daughter, Gwendolyn Bates of Memphis, and two sisters, Madeline Williams of Trumann and Joyce James of Memphis.
