Herman Stephen Willeke was born in Herstelle, Germany on 29 Jun 1831 to Stephanus Willeke and Marie Justine Wuestfield. He was baptized in the Catholic church in Herstelle on 1 Jul 1831. He married Caroline Louise Christiane Friedrichs in Bodenwerder, Germany on 31 Jan 1857.

Shortly after their marriage, Herman and Caroline emigrated to Texas where they had two children. Herman enlisted in the Confederate Army on 1 Jun 1862 and served under Captain Horace Haldeman in the Texas Haldeman's Artillery Battery (also known as the Texas 4th Field Artillery Battery).

Herman died of a gunshot wound while stationed near Pine Bluff, AR on 13 Mar 1863 and was buried on the grounds of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Pine Bluff, AR. His widow remarried to Aloyse (Louis) Jacobs and had 8 more children between 1867 - 1879.
