Cmdr. William A. Wintter (USN Ret.) of Southport, and Venice, Fla., was born to the late Wilhelm A. Wintter and Irene O'Rourke Wintter, he was also the grandson of Baseball Hall of Famer, James "Orator Jim" O'Rourke. A lifelong area resident, William was active in the Sea Scouts and the Boy Scouts, achieving the prestigious status of Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Fairfield High School, class of 1939 and Wesleyan University, class of 1943. After attending Officer's School, he was called into active duty commanding ships in the Atlantic and Pacific during two wars, proudly serving his country. Married in 1947, he eventually joined the family business, Wintter and North Insurance Agency of Bridgeport, becoming co-owner with his cousin Walter E. North. Settling in Easton, he was a past president of the Bridgeport Lions Club, active in the Easton Exchange Club, a member of the Congregational Church of Easton and a member of Brooklawn Country Club. The Wintter's were avid boaters and also traveled the world extensively.

Wintter and his wife, Ethel, of Fairbanks, Alaska; and his daughter, Carolyn Wintter Corrao and her husband, James, of Kennebunk, Maine; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His many nieces and nephews and countless dear friends loved him and will miss him. He was predeceased by Walter E. North and Polly N. Cogswell who were more brother and sister to him than cousins.
