Garry K. Dow , 67, Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Brasher Falls, died Thursday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hot Springs.
A memorial Mass will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Church.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Hammill Funeral Home, Winthrop.
Donations may be made to the rescue squad of one's choice.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; six sons, Philip, Preston, Conn., Garry, Brasher Falls, Theodore, Massena, Paul, Orange, N.J., Thomas, Canton, and Peter, North Lawrence; seven daughters, Mrs. Michael (Julia) Best, Brasher Falls, Mrs. Lee (Jeanette) Gravelle, Norwood, Mrs. Victor (Constance) Rufa, Massena, Mrs. Fernando (Cathleen) Rufa, Winthrop, Mrs. David (Mary) Mathieson, Wallkill, Mrs. Jeffrey (Martha) Johnson, Brasher Falls, and Suzanne LaShomb, Potsdam; 26 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Born April 24, 1927, in Utica, son of Joseph Morris and Jeannette Bassford Dow , he attended Ogdensburg Free Academy and George Hall Vocational School, where he studied to be an electrician.
He served with the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1946, including service in World War II. His ship was given the task of transporting wounded from the Battle of the Bulge to England and the United States. The crew brought back the entire 4th Infantry and all of Gen. George S. Patton's divisions.
During the summer of 1945, the ship made 107 trips across the English Channel.
He married Helen L. Ward of Ogdensburg May 9, 1946, in St. Mary's Cathedral, Ogdensburg, with the Rev. John Ryan officiating.
The couple resided in Dickinson Center, where Mr. Dow was a member and chief of the fire department.
On Sept. 24, 1958, Mr. Dow was the first maintenance mechanic hired at the newly opened St. Lawrence plant of Reynolds Metals, Massena. He was employed there until retiring in 1976.
Mr. and Mrs. Dow moved to Brasher Falls in 1960 and to Hot Springs in 1990.
