Hugh Carlton "Carlie" Kane A longtime and well-known resident of the Fassett and Gillett, Pa., communities died
Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Sylvan Ridge Personal Care Home, Columbia Cross Roads, where he had been receiving care at the age of 92. Born on Sept. 2, 1917, in Erie, Pa., Carlie was the son of Reverend J. Sydney and Nevah Kane. With a high regard for education, Hugh received his B.A. from Adrian College, Mich., with a degree in education and received his M.S. from the University of Southern California. He received his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Sarasota. After living and teaching in California, he educated students at the Horseheads, N.Y., School District from 1953-1968. There, he worked with elementary students and junior high special education students. Dr. Kane was an associate professor of education and supervisor of student teachers at Mansfield University from 1968-1970. He also was a clinical associate psychologist for the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene at the Elmira Reception Center. Throughout his career he was well respected by his colleagues and students. He owned and operated Northend Garage, Laundromat, and Car Wash. He was a member of the Masonic Trojan Lodge No. 306, the Elmira Heights American Legion, and the Fassett Grange. Dedicated to his country, Carlie served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the LST 449. His loving wife of 40 years, Edith CONGDON Kane, predeceased him in 1990. In serving the Lord, Carlie was a member of the Fassett Baptist Church where he would often share his musical gift of playing the violin for services. His passions included traveling with his wife Edith, writing poetry, playing music, visiting friends and relatives, attending Navy conventions, and collecting classic cars. He is survived by his loving family: twin daughters Collette (Marvin) Roberts and Colleen Kane of Gillett, Pa.; grandson Timothy Roberts; brother Reverend J. Sydney Kane Jr. of Lansdale, Pa.; nephew Houghton (Nancy) Kane of Lansdale, Pa.; niece Margaret (Dennis) Roberts of Fort Wayne, Ind.; step-sons Thomas (Jeannette) Congdon of Pine City and family Lisa (James) Epp and Scott Congdon, and Lynn (Barbara) Congdon of Gillett, Pa., and family Tanya (David) Decker, Barbara Lynn (Chris) Valero, and Shaun (Rebecca) Congdon. In addition to his parents and wife, Carlie was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Elise Kane. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway St., Southport, from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. the Fassett Baptist Church, Fassett, Pa., with his pastor and friend, the Reverend Donald Rockwell, officiating. Graveside services will take place at 1 p.m. in the Niles Valley Cemetery, Middlebury Center, Pa., where full military honors will be accorded to Mr. Kane. Memorials may be directed to the Fassett Baptist Church, 36089 Rt. 14, Gillett, PA 16925, or Guthrie Hospice, RR1 Box 154, Towanda, PA 18848, in his memory. Mr. Kane's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Sylvan Ridge Personal Care Home for the care they provided Carlie and the comfort they provided his family during his final days with us.
