Samuel P. Hardin, 82, died peacefully at home October 3, 2004, surrounded by his family.


A viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, and a celebration of his life will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Anchorage Church of Christ, 2700 DeBarr Road. Mr. Hardin's son-in-law, Ken Smith, will officiate. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Don Smith, Dan Smith, David Webb, Steve Webb, Russ Wallace and Chris Woods. Burial will take place afterward at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.


Mr. Hardin was born July 2, 1922, in Ridgway, Illinois. He married Georgia Padgett in 1941, and they and their three daughters moved to Alaska in 1959.


Mr. Hardin served in the U.S. Navy, later retiring from civil service at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He also was a full-time elder for the Anchorage Church of Christ until health concerns necessitated retirement.


Mr. Hardin loved making woodworking gifts and playing his guitar.


His family wrote: "Dad was the most wonderful example of what a Christian husband, father and grandfather should be. He always had time for his family and even in physical pain made the effort to be with the family on special occasions. While he loved his family, it was his deep love for the Lord that he leaves as a shining example to those who knew him."


Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Georgia; daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Ken Smith and Verneta and David Wallace; daughter, Connie Webb and her fiancΓ©, Dean Ross; grandchildren and their families, Don, Beth, Jeffrey and Katie Smith, Dan, Carol, Tyler and Halle Smith, Christy and Chris Woods, and Russ Wallace and daughter Malaya of Anchorage; Nancy, Richard, Cara and Travis Loveland of Cairo, Egypt; David, Tracy, Kirsten and Derrick Webb of Louisville, Kentucky.; and Steve, Alex, Ryan and Eli Webb of Norman, Oklahoma.


Mr. Hardin was preceded in death by his brother, two sisters and daughter, Pauletta.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Midnight Sun Bible Camp in care of Anchorage Church of Christ.
