Sgt. Brian E. Dunlap of Vista, California was part of a military transition team advising and training the Iraqi army. Brian lived in Boston, Mass., and Holland before moving to Carmichael. He attended Del Campo High and was a member of their ROTC program. He joined the Marines in 1995. In 2002 he was discharged from the Marines and became a firefighter for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Dunlap re-enlisted in the Marine Reserves in June 2004. He was a member of the Emerald Society, a traditional Irish Honor Guard organization for firefighters. He was known as one of the most engaging personalities due to his ability to make friends; Brian never met a stranger. He also had an incredible sense of who he was in life. His comrades nicknamed him "Ratchet Jaw" because he seem to love to talk. In fact if he was quiet they all knew something was wrong with him. Brian was a dedicated, intelligent and sharp Marine. He accomplished missions he didn't initially agree to, but being the motivating individual that he was, he did it anyway. He was killed in Iraq at age 34.
