James, was born to Graham Graham-Montgomery and Alice Hope Johnstone, on February 6, 1850. He was promoted up to Lt Colonel in the Coldstream Guards, and served as the Deputy Lieutenant, of Peebles and Kinross-shires, Scotland. He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Stanhope, on the death of his father on June 2, 1901. He was accidentally killed on November 7, 1902, unmarried. His brother Basil, succeeded him as 5th Baronet Stanhope.
