O'Wighton Delk Simpson – Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force
Age 88, of Old Port Cove, North Palm Beach, Florida, passed away on Sunday evening, October 3, 1999, after an extended illness.
Lieutenant Colonel Simpson was born August 27, 1911 in Smithfield, Virginia; son of the late Frank B. Simpson and Emily Delk Simpson.
He had been a residence of the Palm Beaches since 1969, coming from Washington, DC. Lieutenant Colonel Simpson attended Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Virginia, and George Washington University School of Law, Washington, DC.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps and in May of 1946, he re-entered the U.S. Air Force and served until 1961, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career, Colonel Simpson received several commendation medals: Army Commendation Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nationals Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, Oak Leaf Cluster to Commendation Medal, Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. He attended Air University, Norfolk, VA and Strategic Intelligence School, Washington, DC. He attended St. Mark Episcopal Church, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Hooper (Furniss) Simpson, who died February 8, 1989 and his son, O'Wighton Delk Simpson Jr., who died December 31, 1982. Colonel Simpson leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted sister, Annie Laurie Simpson Stultz and husband, Lieutenant Colonel Harry T. Stultz Jr., USAF (Ret.) of Jupiter, FL; six nieces and nephews; his devoted friend, Mark Thomas and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 19, 1999, at Fort Myer Chapel, Fort Myer, Virginia with Full Air Force Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
