David Frank Locey age 70, longtime Sturgis resident, community leader and friend of many passed away Wednesday morning October 2, 2013 in Sturgis, MI.

He was born January 13, 1943 in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania son of the late James and Mildred (Anderson) Locey.
Dave resided in Sturgis from the age of 14 coming from Sugar Grove.

He was first married to Sharon Dougan on September 10, 1960. On July 8, 1995 he married Cheryl (Gay) Hasty in Sturgis.
For the past 38 years he owned and operated David F. Locey C.P.A., P.C. in Sturgis and for 18 years along with his wife has owned and operated Timberly Tree Farm also in Sturgis. For several years he was an instructor at Glen Oaks Community College and facilitated many business seminars.

He was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church.
Dave will be remembered by many as always having time to give to others and local organizations. Some of his many involvements included a long time member of the Sturgis Kiwanis Club, Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, Glen Oaks Community College Board, Sturgis Hospital Board where he was instrumental in the transition from city owned to private ownership.

Dave had a true appreciation for exercise including, hiking the Grand Canyon, running, participating in several marathons including the Chicago, Disney World and the Detroit Marathons, playing golf and biking. He enjoyed the outdoors, working at the tree farm or just watching sunsets across Grey Lake from he and Cheryl's dream home.
Dave loved time spent with his family and often would share many stories of the northern Michigan, Alaskan and Canadian fishing trips with his sons, sons-in-law and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl "Cherie"; his children: Kimberlee (Thomas) Bontrager of Knoxville, Tennessee, Tod (Wendy) Locey of Kalamazoo, Jill (John) Grisdale of New Albany, Ohio, Jeff Locey of Gilbert, Arizona, Melissa (Kevin) Winklepleck of Paducah, Kentucky and Andrew (Christina) Hasty of Paducah, Kentucky; six grandchildren: Catharina Locey, Jack Grisdale, Mason Hasty, Faith Grisdale, Addison Winklepleck and Braeden Hasty; four sisters: Grace Ann (Walt) Ketchum of Mishawaka, Indiana, Carol Locey of Angola, Indiana, Florence "Pete" (Jerry) Todd of Bonita, California and Shirley (Jimmy) Vaughan of McKinney, Texas; three brothers: Robert (Laurie) Locey of Denton, Texas, Randy (Dorinda) Locey of Frisco, Texas and Dan (Cathleen) Locey of Edwardsburg; step-sisters: Debra King of Elkhart, Indiana and Denise Gay of Middlebury, Indiana and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-brother: Dennis King.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of David F. Locey will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church, 907 N. Nottawa St. in Sturgis. The Rev. Steve Bean will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Dave's memory consider the Kiwanis Club of Sturgis c/o: Bruce Gosling, 127 W. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091 (proceeds directed to the annual Children's Christmas Party and the college scholarship program) or Camp Fort Hill c/o: Sturgis Foundation, 310 N. Mr. David Locey was found dead Wednesday morning, October 6, 2013 inside his office at 67036 N. M-66, in Sturgis, MI. Investigators with the St. Joseph County Major Crimes Task Force said Mr. Locey was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head.

A former employee of Locey's, Andy James Brown, 36, of Portage, is in police custody and has been charged in a felony embezzlement case that St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough said could be connected to Locey's slaying.
