Per South Carolina Deaths, 1915-1943, a collection found on FamilySearch.org: He was a son of W. F. Nash and Elizabeth Herne, both born in N. C. He was widowed at the time of his death and his spouse is not named. She died at Columbia Hospital of shock following fracture of the hip from a fall. The informant was Mrs. O. G. Donny of Columbia, S. C.

North Carolina Marriages, 1759-1979, a collection found on FamilySearch.org: R. C. Nash, son of Whitson and Jane Nash, and Lizzie Forrest, daughter of Roland and Jane Forrest, were married 12 February 1875 in Stanly Co., N. C.

Found in The State 16 May 1930: Funeral services for R. C. Nash, 81, for many years prominently identified with the business interests of Columbia, who died Wednesday morning at a local hospital, were held from Main Street Methodist church at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. J. F. Lupo, pastor, assisted by Dr. A. N. Brunson, the Rev. C. C. Herbert and the Rev. Tracy T. Munnerlyn, in charge. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery. Mr. Nash made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Doney, 2320 Divine street. For a number of years he had been working in Columbia and during that time made a large number of friends who are greatly grieved because of his death. He retired from business several years ago and until May 5 had been getting along well, his death coming as a result of an injury which he suffered by falling at that time. Mr. Nash was born April 24, 1849 at Albemarle, N. C., the son of Cap. Whiton (note: how it is spelled in the obit) and Elizabeth Nash. His father served gallantly throughout the Confederate war and though Mr. Nash was too young at that time to join the army, he served as best as possible by guarding prisoners, hauling supplies for the army and in various other ways. In 1874 he married Miss Elizabeth Forrest of Albemarle, who died three years ago. He was a member of Main Street Methodist church. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. R. E. L. Freeman, Mrs. O. G. Donny, Mrs. James Edward Gelston, all of Columbia, Mrs. Asbury H. Veal of Charlotte, N. C.; one son, Walter F. Nash, Columbia; and four sisters, Mrs. Silas J. Biggers of Sanford, Fla., Mrs. Charles Harris and Mrs. Thomas Burgeas of New London, N. C., and Mrs. William Burkhead of Charlotte, N. C. The following grandchildren also survive: Mrs. O'Hear Whitsell Fraser of Walterboro, Miss Elizabeth Nash Freeman, Miss Margaret Freeman, Robert Freeman, Louise Donny, Anne Elizabeth Donny, Tooto Donny, Jr., and William Donny, all of Columbia, and Mary and Lavinia Veal of Charlotte, N. C.

Note: I cannot find evidence that Whitson Nash was married to anybody other than Nancy Jane Hearne. If you can prove he was married to an Elizabeth Hearne/Herne, please email me. A family researcher provided the following: You are correct. His father Whitson was married only once and to Nancy Jane Hearne, my 3d Great Aunt.

I believe the confusion of Elizabeth being his mother, was actually his wife, Lizzie. Lizzie would be a nickname for Elizabeth and she was named Elizabeth on a Census document and named Elizabeth Cameline Forrest on their daughter death cert (daughter was Etta Nash Veal).

Reuben is found on the 1850 Census with his parents in Gold Hill, Rowan Co, NC: Whitron (Whitson) Nash 22 Jane Nash 20 Reuben C Nash 1.
