Active civic leader dies at age of 42

Robert R. Miller, long active in his support of various sporting activities here and in affairs of the St. Mary's Cathedral Parish, died unexpectedly Monday at St. Francis Medical Center. Mr. Miller, who resided at 1802 Oak Hills, was 42 years old.

He was born at Gordonville July 11, 1934. On August 21, 1954, he married the former Miss Bonnie Wuffers here.

Mr. Miller was manager of Day Transfer Co. here, and a member of Teamsters Local 574.

He founded the Notre Dame Boosters Club, and drove the team bus. He also started the present Notre Dame High School expansion fund for a new addition to the school. A past board member of St. Mary's Cathedral, of which he was a member, Mr. Miller was also a past treasurer of the St. Mary's Home and School Association. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and also served on its governing board. An Elk, Mr. Miller was a lecturing knight and past treasurer of the lodge.

From his high school days until the present, Mr. Miller took an active interest in sports.

A graduate of Notre Dame High School, Mr. Miller played on its baseball and basketball teams. He played two years on the American Legion team, which in 1951 won the state championship. Mr. Miller also played for the Capahas and was involved with independent softball, playing on the Howard Swan Jets team, which won the state championship twice.

He attended St. Regis College at Denver, CO, two years, where he played basketball, and also attended SEMO State University.

Mr. Miller served as a coach for St. Mary's Church League basketball, and for the Little League baseball program.

Surviving: his wife; daughters, the Misses Connie, Carol and Christy Miller, all of the home; and his mother, Mrs. Alvina Jones, Kansas City.

The body is at Ford and Sons Funeral Home, where friends may call. There will be an Elks service at 7 tonight at the funeral home, followed by parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus service at 8 o'clock.

Service will be 10 Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Cathedral with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Dirnberger, Jack Hinton, Joe Naueri, Ed Arnzen, Paul Oliver and Fred Meystedt.
