His mother was Eliza (Hartzel) Zinn, but his father is reported both as Joseph and George, leading one to ask if Dad weren't Joseph George or George Joseph. He married Hannah Marie Houck February 7, 1859, in Butler Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Merville Eugene (b. 10/18/59), Harry Houck (b. 05/16/61), Jessie Cora (b. 07/04/63), Minnie Laura (b. 08/12/65), and Elida Hannah (b. 09/15/68). Years later, a pension examiner asked him if he had been married before, to which he replied, "No, this is my first and only wife... (and she is a dear, old gal)." In 1860, he was a clerk living in Idaville, Huntington Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. F, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 10, 1865.

After the war, he lived in the Harrisburg area but by 1890 resided in Gettysburg, Adams County, where he died from "apoplexy - mitral insufficiency."
