David Monroe LUCAS, son of William and Rachel LUCAS, was born on January 14, 1841, and died May 20, 1921, aged eighty years, four months and six days. His parents were among the pioneer settlers of Monroe County, Indiana; his father having come from Virginia and his mother people—the PENNINGTON’s—came from North Carolina. He early attended the schools of Monroe County, and at the age of sixteen years he became a teacher, and taught for about twenty years in the schools of Monroe and Greene counties. His first wife was Mary DECKARD, of Monroe County, and one daughter, Laura, survives. The second wife was Miss BARTON, of Greene County and to this union were born one child, Abbie. The third wife was Elizabeth TERRELL, also of Greene County. To this union five children were born—three sons and two daughters. The two daughters, one son and the wife, preceded him in death. Two sons—John W. and Riley—survive. He was converted at an early age and joined the Baptist church at Smithville. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Henry FLORY at the late home of the deceased in Richland Township, on Sunday, May 22. Interment in the Terrell Cemetery.
