Obit: Mrs. Eliza Hagan
Death on Wednesday night at a quarter to eleven called Welland's oldest resident and oldest member of the Methodist Church in Canada, in person of Mrs. Eliza Hagen, relict of the late Hugh Hagen. Deceased was in her 95th year. She has resided in Welland at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Bates, ever since her husband died twelve years ago. It was here that death called her. A strange co-incidence in connection with the death of Mrs. Hagen is that her husband, who just twelve years older than her, predeceased her twelve years ago. Death was due to natural causes, Mrs. Hagen had been confined to her bed for about two weeks. The end came peacefully. she fell asleep earlier in the evening and never awakened. Mrs. Hagan was born in Carrick-Fergus, County Antrim, Ireland, her maiden name Bailey. At the age of eight years she joined the Methodist Church and since that time has been one of its most faithful members. Up to a few hours before her death she could quote Scripture with clearness and precision. At the age of twenty-three she married Hugh Hagen and set sail with him the following day for Canada. When she arrived here the country was still in a wild state. The couple settled first in Hinchenbrook, Lower Canada. During their residence in that part of the country a number of outlaws mistook her husband for his outspoken brother and attempted to kill him, She heroically stood between them for one and a half. hours; thus saving his life. Nine Children later Mr. & Mrs. Hagen moved to New York State where they lived on the border of Vermont for a sometime. Later the returned to Norfolk county and resided there until Mr. Hagen's death twelve years ago. Nine children were born to Mr & Mrs Hagen, Only two Mrs. Geo. Bates of Welland and James Hagen of Welsdale, Saskatchewan, survive. Two sisters and one brother also survive, namely, John Bailey of Hagersville, Mrs. Margaret Meehan of Hagersville and Mrs. Wm. Hagan of Waisingham, Ont. Rev. C.D.
